Is a Golden Rally on the Horizon for Gold?

Over the past few weeks, gold has demonstrated solid resistance against further decline, as evidenced by the lower shadows on several candlesticks, which can be interpreted as an indication of a potential market reversal.

Gold: Fundamental Analysis Highlights

Gold continues to be supported by structural central bank purchases, physical investment demand in Asia—particularly for bullion and coins—and a relative recovery of long positions in the futures market. However, capital flows in gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) remain volatile and regionally fragmented. For instance, the positive inflows seen in the first half of the year were coupled with heavy capital outflows in June and weakness in North American funds.

Geopolitical and regional tensions can, on one hand, drive up safe-haven demand. On the other hand, if they lead to a sustained increase in oil prices, they could exacerbate inflationary pressures and expectations for higher interest rates.

If this scenario results in the US Federal Reserve maintaining interest rates at high levels or raising them further, alongside rising nominal and real bond yields and a stronger US dollar, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold will increase, and the positive impact of geopolitical and regional risks could be partially offset.

Conversely, an easing of tensions is not necessarily entirely bearish for gold. If de-escalation leads to lower oil prices, a moderation of inflationary pressures, a lower anticipated interest rate path, and a weaker dollar, the negative impact of reduced safe-haven demand could be somewhat mitigated. In such a scenario, for real yields to decline, nominal bond yields would need to fall faster than inflation expectations.

In the long term, the diversification of foreign exchange reserves and consistent central bank buying provide structural backing for gold. Furthermore, in times of uncertainty, investors naturally gravitate toward safe-haven assets.

Gold Price Action Overview

Gold’s downward momentum halted as it reached the key level of $4,000, and despite multiple tests, it has thus far failed to break below it.With the formation of pin bar candlestick patterns at this level on the weekly chart, the initial signs of a weakening downtrend have emerged.

Considering the price is currently in an oversold condition, as long as the crucial $4,000 level holds, there is potential for an upward move toward the $4,220 resistance level, and in a more aggressive rally, up to $4,290.

In the alternative bearish scenario, if prices pull back below the descending trendline and candlesticks stabilize beneath it (which can be drawn and monitored on the 4-hour chart), the prospects for an upward move will diminish. Should the $4,000 support level be eliminated, the price has the potential to decline further and reach the $3,900 support level.
